gift #17, Meeting New People

April 30, 2016

Every time I head out to deliver a gift, I find myself singing the Sesame Street classic “Do you know the people in your neighbourhood” It is such a catchy little tune and completely epitomises living in a small town.

This week I cooked a meal for a family I have never met before. This has been a fairly rare occurrence, many people I have cooked for previously,  if I didn’t know them, I knew of them.

This week I felt quite guilty. I had been contacted by a member of the community and made aware of this family and the need they had. I called to arrange a time to cook for them only to find they had gone away for a couple of days R&R. A couple of other people were also brought to my attention, so I slotted them in first. This is the challenge really, some weeks I struggle to find a recipient and at other times I may have several people that I could feed.

Guilt aside I would say this family still absolutely could use a night off. The mother of the family has faced several health challenges in the last 6 months, the most recent being a melanoma and the father of the family is about to lose his dad.  I will take this opportunity to say Melanoma can be a quiet achiever, be sure to get moles checked and if something looks different , please go to the Dr.

I wanted to really create some warming comfort food for this family of four, after a quick phone call, it became apparent they love a curry, so Beef Madras it was!

I have to say that walking up to a strangers door with baskets of food feels mildly intimidating. I’m never quite sure what the reception will be and like always it was nothing but warm and welcoming. I had a lovely chat with the family about community and the fact that it is exactly that, combined with family and friends that gets you through the harrowing times and some of the biggest challenges of your life.

Friands

This project continues to teach me things and it continues to reinforce how great this region is. I am so grateful for 52gifts and the journey I am on.
